First, an apology! In my last post I promised a new weekly feature and due to travel was unable to post… I thought I was coming home Tuesday, but actually it was Wednesday! Being “of a certain age”, it wore me out. I guess you could say I had to recuperate from my vacation! Look for it this coming Wednesday, August 10!
So, here goes:
One of my guilty pleasures is a couple of the reality shows. Honest, just two! “Survivor” during the regular season and “Big Brother” in the summer months. Both are on CBS if you’re not familiar with them. Full disclosure: my beloved works in a technical capacity for CBS News/”60 Minutes”
Anyway, the premise of “Big Brother” is getting a group of people all together in one house, cut off from the world and tv, and competing for 1/2 million in prize money for the last one standing. It occurred to me that this was a microcosm of the U.S. and our presidential election process.
First, there is a diverse group of people from all walks of life. Different ages, races, religions, parts of the country, and sexual orientation. Last year there was even a lady who was trans-gender (and yes they all used the same bathroom).
Next, there are competitions! The HOH (Head of Household) is the most powerful and gets to select two (or more) people to place up for eviction and losing the opportunity to win the prize. This person needs to satisfy the vast majority of the houseguests to gain power and the prize! There is also a competition which, if won, someone can choose to veto the HOH’s nomination and then the HOH has to select someone else to take their place.
Needless to say there is LOTS of drama, deceitfulness, and manipulation. Because of the many differing personalities, there is bickering and a few times in the past there has even been threats and mild violence! Lastly, often alliances are formed between different household members. Ultimately, a group of evicted houseguests will choose the ONE who will gain the prize money.
Consider this now… the many candidates of recent months are like the houseguests. We are all from different cultures, even within the United States, with differing ways of thinking how the country should be. All in a competition of sorts wanting to create the ideal America. And I came to the conclusion that our presidential race is like a competition for “Head of Household” or more plainly, leader of the free world! Like “Big Brother” this person wants to win the ultimate prize which is the White House with all the power and influence inherent in that prestigious title! We also have an election to choose the people who will represent us in our “veto competition”-our Congress people and Senators. And you can’t deny all the drama, manipulation of words and yes… even outright untruths! And alliances? Consider our political parties. Dems, Repubs, Libertarians, Independents… and on our local ballot last year I even saw Communist.
So there you have it. And the Lord, being God reminded me of the words of The Teacher ” What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. ” – Ecclesiastes 1:9. If you’re so inclined, I heartily suggest you read the entire book! It can be depressing at times-all is vanity after all! I’m so thankful that our God is in control!
I hope you’ll follow me on Facebook! Keep up with all the stuff that’s planned for the future!
